Cooling Tower Fill Inspection Before Seasonal Restart: Check More Than Visible Damage

When an industrial cooling tower returns to service after an extended shutdown, the fill may appear unchanged from the previous operating season. However, stored equipment can be affected by debris entry, residual deposits, prolonged drying, support movement, and the conditions under which the tower was isolated. A restart inspection should therefore establish whether the fill remains mechanically sound and whether the water distribution system can wet it evenly.

The inspection should start with the accessible edges and support interfaces. Look for cracked sheets, sagging packs, loose sections, blocked passages, and signs that panels have shifted during maintenance. Before full-load operation, check distribution nozzles and remove accumulated debris using a cleaning method appropriate for the material and its condition.

Confirm the Installation Method Before Ordering Replacement Sections

Replacement work after shutdown is often time-sensitive. An incorrect panel width or connection method can delay commissioning even when the fill material itself is suitable. Confirm the existing pack dimensions, support arrangement, access restrictions, and whether the original assembly is glued, suspended, or mechanically retained.

For projects requiring flexibility in panel dimensions and mounting arrangements, multi-size dual-mount crosscurrent heat transfer substrate can be reviewed alongside the installation details. Where the design uses adhesive or suspension mounting, consult the configuration described by full-size adhesive and suspension mount crosscurrent flow panel.

For compact counter-flow arrangements, 305/610mm dual-width counter-flow fill may also be relevant when checking replacement dimensions. For a cross-flow configuration, the 870mm width cross-flow fill provides a separate size reference.

Document the First Operating Hours

After restart, compare entering and leaving water temperatures, water distribution, fan operation, and any abnormal vibration against the site's normal operating records. If performance is unstable, investigate the entire system rather than assuming the fill is responsible. A documented restart baseline makes it easier to separate a seasonal maintenance issue from a longer-term change in process load or water quality.
